Professional Development

The HEDS (Arena) programme is for all staff who teach or support students’ learning. It supports education development whilst sharing and recognising best practice across UCL.

This programme is for all staff who teach and support students' learning, aimed at improving the quality of teaching across the institution, and sharing and recognising best practice.

This includes:

Mandatory courses for PGTAs, new lecturers and supervisors
Optional courses and workshops for all staff, with some targeted at specific roles, such as Personal Academic Tutors, professional services colleagues, postdocs and education leaders
A wide range of online courses and resources designed at supporting all areas of educational practice.

The Arena Centre's workshops, courses and resources all support staff who wish to be professionally recognised for their educational practice through our Advance HE-accredited Arena Fellowship scheme.

Fellowships

UCL's professional development pathway for teaching and support staff, a scheme of awards through our Advance HE-accredited Arena Fellowship scheme.

Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs)

Development pathway for PGTAs who teach at UCL, leading (optionally) to become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Professional development for postdoctoral researchers looking to develop their teaching and supervision.

Lecturers on probation

Gain a teaching qualification to complete probationary requirements and apply to become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Professional services

For staff in learning support roles, including Teaching Administrators, Lab Technicians and Librarians who want to gain recognition for their work with a Fellowship.

Personal Academic Tutors

For any staff involved in a Personal Academic Tutoring role (academic, professional, and technical services) through professional development and resources.

Supervisors

Offered with UCL Doctoral School, we support you in your supervision of research students through professional development and resources.
