Thomas Kelly of Dublin, pursued apparently unsuccessfully the compensation for the enslaved people on Montreal estate in St Mary Jamaica, which was awarded to Michael Kelly as executor of John Kelly (allegedly only the agent of Thomas Kelly's brother William Kelly, the former owner, who had died in London c.1829).
T71/856 St Mary no, 484. Michael Kelly claimed as executor and trustee of John Kelly. T71/1594 pp 148-9 1/12/1837 letter to Thomas Kelly of 14 Grafton St Dublin: concern over number of slaves, needs London agent. T71/1606 letter from Thomas Kelly 20/11/1835 as heir [brother] and surviving executor of late William Kelly who died in 1829 with 35 slaves, leaving late John Kelly as acting executor, said John Kelly possessed himself of slaves, no account of property sent to me; letter T71/1606 27/11/1837: I had no reply from 3/1/1836 letter; Letter from Thomas Keogh ob Thomas Kelly 17/12/1839, 'As he is ignorant of the position in which his claim now stands.' William Kelly had registered 52 slaves 1829, none registered in names of John Kelly or Michael Kelly. William Kelly had left Jamaica 1829, died in London same year, had left affairs in Jamaica in hands of John Kelly. 'The amount of this claim [no. 484] has been paid to the Attorney-General of the Commissioners of Compensation to abide the decision for the conflicting rights of the parties.'
