1B23: RECOMMENDED BOKS
PHYSICS PART OF COURSE
-
The only book you will need to buy for the physics part
of the course is Physics for Scientists and Engineers, with Modern
Physics by Searway and Jewett (published by
Thomson, 6th Edition, 2004, ISBN 0-534-40844-3). This is the 1st-year
course book (used for all Physics courses), and is on sale through the
Tutors at a specially discounted price. It also contains a useful CDROM.
-
For more advanced information on quantum physics,
try An Introduction to the Properties of Matter by Brehm and Mullin
(Wiley, 1989). This book is used for the second and third-year quantum
physics courses at UCL.
ASTRONOMY PART OF COURSE
-
For Astronomy students, the recommended book is Introductory
Astronomy and Astrophysics by Zeilik, Gregory and Smith (4th Edition,
published by Saunders, 1998). You will also need this book for course
1B11 Foundations of Astronomy.
-
Another book to consider is Universe by Kaufmann and
Freedman (5th Edition, published by Freeman, 1998). This book is very clear
and has good illustrations covering much of the material from the Astronomy/Cosmology
side of 1B23.
