Recent work
• Number-estimation. We have shown that maths ability is not only linked to people’s ability to make a rough estimate of the number of objects (e.g. animals on the right) but to a more general aptitude for visual tasks. (link).
•Crowding in contours.
Contour-shape changes
perceived orientation
in a way that depends
on where the contour
falls in the visual field
(movie on right)
•Schizophrenia. People with schizophrenia experience weaker crowding (link)
•Amblyopia. We are close to completing an exploratory study of a treatment for amblyopia based on home viewing of 3D movies.
•Glaucoma. We are testing the use of digital image-processing to correct perceptual distortions (metamorphopsia) arising from macular disease..
What we do
Visual cells in the eye and brain respond to small parts of images. My lab focuses on understanding integration - how we turn a patchwork of local neural activity into coherent global percepts. We also look at how disorders of the eye and brain can lead to faulty integration.
