Mercedes Crisostomo Meza
During the twentieth century, different violent processes such as revolutions, counterrevolutions, authoritarian regimes, civil wars, and state violence took place in Latin America. Anti-communism, communism, revolutionary aims, and the Cold War rationale shaped the everyday battles between states, elites, and grassroots groups. In the Peruvian case, the research on these topics has focused on the Internal Armed Conflict (1980-2000) because of the armed struggle of the Shining Path, the state’s responses, and the fact that Peru experienced major economic, social, and political upheaval resulting in more than 70,000 victims. However, the 1960s and 1970s, have received less attention.

My doctoral project examined these decades throughout the experiences and memories of left-wing militant women, both from urban and rural settings, who took part in revolutionary political parties aspiring to challenge and change the Peruvian status quo.
