Placement opportunities

Training has been in our remit since our 1974 origins. One of the ways we honour this is through university student and school work experience placements.

University placements

ASE provides year-long placements for UCL Institute of Archaeology students as part of the BA Archaeology with Placement Year. Students on this placement work alongside ASE archaeologists as a part of a professional team to excavate, survey, study, manage and conserve historic sites and finds. You can read about meet our students and find out about their experiences of their placements over at our Placement Student Hub.

We also occasionally have limited capacity for other shorter university student placements. On these we aim to give the students valuable experience in commercial archaeology as well as the opportunity to learn practical skills. Please contact us and, where possible, we will try to arrange a placement that builds upon your skills and interests.

School work experience placements

Each year we provide a limited number of one-week placement opportunities for students at local schools. The placement offers an insight into a number of aspects of commercial archaeology. If you are interested in a school work experience placement please contact us directly or ask your school to contact us on your behalf.

Further information about becoming involved in archaeology through local societies, training excavations, or at a higher education level can be found on the Current Archaeology website.

Please note that we cannot provide transport or accommodation for any of these placements, and travel to and from the offices must be arranged by the student.
