Okasha/Forsyth/2001, 350: `The monastery of Lismore, on the River Blackwater, was traditionally founded by St Carthage (Mo-Chuda) in 636. The earliest recorded abbots died in 700 and 703. From the 730s the Annals preserve the obits of a long list of abbots and other personnel down to the twelfth century. From an early date the monastery and school at Lismore became `one of the great religious centres of Ireland''.
