This module provides a review of the archaeological evidence for human development from the first appearance of modern humans (prior to 100,000 BP) until the transition to farming.
The module will examine issues which include: the emergence of symbolic behaviour and "modernity" in the archaeological record; the adaptations of hunter-gatherers to the harsh environments of the last glacial period; the analysis and interpretation of Palaeolithic art; the colonization of Australia and the Americas; and the transformations in hunter-gatherer societies prior to the beginnings of farming.
