Helena Vowles-Shorrock – History of Art

Taking Veronica Ryan's work Hung (2019) as a starting point, this paper will consider the various ways in which Ryan's artistic practices speak to both the intimate and the global. In Ryan's practice, seemingly inconspicuous objects become enmeshed in a complex psychic formation of trauma and recovery. Her works speak to the entangled pasts of colonialism, displacement, migration and healing. Based on a series of studio visits made to the artist in the weeks leading to the first pandemic lockdown, this paper will explore and expand on the resonances of Ryan's uncanny sculptural objects and installations.
