A Virtual Tour of Denmark

Nisser - gnomes

A gnome

If you visit Denmark at Christmas, you will see images of little gnomes with red pointed hats everywhere.

The Danes call them 'nisser'. According to Danish folklore, every household has a nisse. His job is to protect the household, so it is important to keep on good terms with him. He only eats once a year, namely on Christmas Eve. In the evening you must give him a bowl of rice pudding with a large knob of butter in the middle. If you are mean with the butter, the nisse will play tricks on you all year. And he can be very nasty. There are stories about him killing farm animals - and even people.
