Postdoctoral Training
Research skills
SysMIC
SysMIC offers online training for the bioscience community from the PhD, through postdoc and PI level. The aim is to develop participants’ maths and computing skills and support effective interdisciplinary research and collaboration. These are increasingly important in research and have been highlighted as priority areas by the BBSRC and MRC. Modules cover introductory and advanced techniques in maths and computing for use in interdisciplinary bioresearch. Participants learn how to use MATLAB to model, simulate and analyse biological systems, and how to use R and Python to analyse data.
Royal Statistical Society
Offers a number of public courses in statistics and data analysis.
Career development
Postdoctoral resources for the Division of Biosciences
The Division provides support for career development through a number of activities including seminars and career events.
Early Career Researcher portal for the Division of Biosciences
The ECR researcher portal provides useful information on funding, training, mailing lists, etc. for early career researchers.
Researcher development
UCL is committed to supporting the professional and career development of researchers, to enable them to make the most of their potential and to help ensure the ongoing creation of excellent research outcomes at UCL and beyond.
Learning and Development Portfolio
UCL’s Learning and Development Portfolio is an overview of all of the leadership, learning and development programmes. Our courses aim to support the learning and development of colleagues from across UCL and to support the implementation of UCL 2034.
Funding
CDB Research Career Development Fellowships
Applications are now open for our Research Career Development Fellowships programme.
Bogue Fellowships
These fellowships support postgraduate research students and post-doctoral researchers working in the Life and Biomedical Sciences to visit North America.
Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions
Deadline typically in April. The goal of Individual Fellowships is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers, wishing to diversify their individual competence in terms of skill acquisition through advanced training, international and intersectoral mobility.
Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowships
Deadline for preliminary applications typically in April. The scheme provides support for individuals at the transition towards independent research (recent PhDs or early postdocs). The four-year award covers the fellow’s salary as well as the costs of travel, training and research expenses (consumables, travel, etc.).
MRC Skills Development Fellowship
Check for UCL deadlines. The scheme supports talented early researchers in the biomedical sciences to explore, consolidate and further develop their quantitative skills (mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics) and/or skills at the social science interface. The three-year award includes the fellow’s salary and support for research staff, consumables expenses, travel costs and capital.
Royal Society Newton International Fellowship
Deadline typically in March. This scheme is for non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK. The award covers the fellow’s salary for 24 months.
