Western Ophthalmic Institution

History

It was founded in 1839, according to its Medical Directory entries

In 1848 its surgeon was H. Burford Norman (educated at University College), its physician was Charles J. Hare (later Professor of Clinical Medicine at University College Hospital) and its consulting surgeon was Richard Quain, Professor of Descriptive Anatomy at University College and assistant surgeon at University College Hospital (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography; Arnold Sorsby, ‘Defunct London Eye Hospitals,’ British Journal of Ophthalmology, vol. 20, 1936)

“This institution appears only in the Directories for 1848 and 1849...It appears to have existed for 10 years” (Arnold Sorsby, ‘Defunct London Eye Hospitals,’ British Journal of Ophthalmology, vol. 20, 1936)
