Sense and Sustainability: Bridging the Gaps is making £30,000 available for research into nanotechnology and the environment. The latest funding opportunity from Bridging the Gaps is a sandpit event being held over two days in May. Bridging the Gaps sandpits address areas that require collaboration between disciplines. The aim of the sandpit is to form new cross-disciplinary collaborations at UCL to carry out novel sustainable urban environments research. Bridging the Gaps provides the venue and the funding for the resulting ideas, so all you need to bring is yourself, your knowledge and your ideas. This year's sandpit, Sense and Sustainability: Networked Sensors for the Urban Environment, focuses on the use of networked sensors to monitor aspects of the urban environment. We are interested in new collaborations from across UCL, we are aiming to form new research partnerships between researchers who have a knowledge of networked sensors and those who have a problem that could be investigated with the sensor data. There is no requirement to have a detailed knowledge of sensor or networking. Although the most obvious collaborations might be between the ‘digital’ disciplines (computer science, electronic and electrical engineering) and the ‘built environment’ disciplines (civil engineering, environmental engineering, architecture, urban design), we are interested in anyone who has a urban sustainability question that can be addressed by using sensor networks, and anyone who has an interest in sensor technology or handling the data they produce. Research areas could be based around include, but are not limited to:
The event will be held on the 20th and 21st May at Devonport House in Greenwich. The sandpit will be an interactive workshop where up to 15 participants will be able to explore the applications of networked sensors for sustainability issues. The research partnerships formed must be interdisciplinary and collaborative. The sandpit format allows research areas and groupings of researchers to emerge from participants' interests over the course of the event. The research collaborations are then funded, based on a review by all participants, from an overall fund of £30,000. Venue details The event will take place over 2 full days (Thursday 20th and Friday 21st May) at the Devonport Hotel in Greenwich, with accommodation (night of the 20th of May), meals and refreshments being provided by Bridging the Gaps.
We try to be an inclusive programme, so if you have any particular requirements, such as a family room or childcare assistance, please let us know and we will try and make arrangements for you. Please contact James Paskins (30661) if you have any questions about this event and your suitability to take part. If you are interested in attending this mini-sandpit please fill in the application form, which is available for download here.
