MCL researchers discover the flow of electrons in CO oxidation at the Cu/CeO2 surface
29 June 2021
The Materials and Catalysis Laboratory (MCL) led by Dr. Feng Ryan Wang has discovered the flow of electrons in CO oxidation at the Cu/CeO2 interface. The result is published as a hot paper at Angewandte Chemie International Edition and a frontispiece for the research article section. The article highlights the electron transfer from CO to Cu2+, then to surface carbon species and Ce4+, and finally reduces the surface adsorbed O2. It presents the full picture of the Electronic Metal-Support-Carbon Interactions (EMSCI). The EMSCI will help predict and improve the catalytic performance in the selective activation of CO2, carbonate, or carbonyl species in C1 chemistry. MCL will keep exploring the frontiers of surface catalysis via synchrotron X-ray based operando methods, elucidating the bond breaking and formation dynamics on the surface.
