"Equity means being treated equal, being given the same respect and opportunities as everyone else." Segun Sowemimo, Facilities Administrator

Segun Sowemimo

What is your job role and how long have you worked at UCL?

Facilities Administrator for Computer Science since October 2021.

What do you do in your role?

Alongside my team, I manage and maintain the Computer Science sites. It’s a varied role with some days feeling the same but other days can have curve balls can come out of nowhere.

What’s the best thing about working in the Computer Science department?

I have a joined a great team that made me feel welcome and appreciated and that I gelled with immediately. I’m also a fan of gadgets and technology so there are a lot of projects and departments that interest me and I hope to learn more about.

What challenges have you had in your career and how did you overcome them?

Outside of UCL -  It has been finding stability in one role that I can develop and progress in, mainly because for a long time I was just working for the sake of working but with no direction or being intentional with career choices, taking non permanent roles to keep money coming in.

My current position with UCL is maternity cover but I really feel comfortable and at home here so I’m hopeful something permanent comes out of it.

What things do you wish you’d known before starting your career?

The importance of planning and having direction and being consistent with decisions and actions in building a career, be willing to start at the bottom work your way up in the right company.

Think about the long term and bigger picture and not just the immediate future

What advice do you have for people who want to do what you do?

If you really want to do what I do or want to do anything be focused, be serious and be committed about making what you want a reality. Do your do diligence, research, network, be open to learning.

What’s the best thing about your job?

My team, the people, the holiday allowance, and flexibility.

What does equity mean to you?

Being treated equal, being given the same respect and opportunities as everyone else.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Keep smiling, laugh, and protect your energy. What’s worth doing is worth doing well.

Who inspires you and why?

Anyone and everyone who stands against injustice and stands up for what’s right.

Unfortunately prejudice in many forms is still alive and kicking and standing up against it can have negative effects on careers and opportunities, puts a target on your back and opens you up to the wrath of ignorance so anyone brave enough to risk their comfort and stability for other people deserve respect.

What professional achievement are you most proud of and why?

Outside of UCL, curating art exhibitions or writing, recording, producing, mixing and mastering and painting the artwork for my albums.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

I would like to be in a place called Happiness & Fulfilment, hopefully not alone and still working at UCL.
