The Human Rights Act 1998: Policy on access to NHS Treatment and Services

August 2000 - January 2002

Sponsor: Nuffield Trust

Principal Investigator: Elizabeth Haggett

About the project

Our research sets out to examine the practical implications of the Human Rights Act 1998 for policy on access to NHS treatment and services. It aims to encourage an approach to health care which reflects and incorporates a human rights culture and standards. Through consultation with health care professionals, health policy makers, service users and their representation groups, human rights lawyers, academics and non-governmental organisations, the project provides clarification and practical guidance for both health-care professionals and service users. The second stage of the project builds on work begun in May-October 2000 by Elizabeth Haggett during her secondment from the Department of Health. The research has resulted in a briefing and guidance materials for health policy makers and professionals.
