Prof John Mitchell awarded the 2024 Leonardo da Vinci Medal

Our new Head of Department, Prof John Mitchell has received the 2024 Leonardo da Vinci Medal of the European Society of Engineering Education (SEFI) for his outstanding contribution to engineering education.

Professor John Mitchell has been honoured with SEFI’s highest accolade in recognition of his remarkable contributions to engineering education, which have had a lasting global impact.

For over two decades at UCL, Professor Mitchell has established himself as an innovative force, known for his practical, yet transformative, educational approaches. His leadership in shaping UCL’s Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) has set new standards in engineering education, positioning it as a leader in research-based learning and real-world assessment practices. The programme received the HEA Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) in 2018, leading to UCL Engineering being hailed as a leader in engineering education in MIT's 2018 report.

As co-director of the CEE, he guided the centre in collaborating with international partners to introduce tailored versions of the IEP, including major initiatives in Egypt and throughout South Africa.

Professor Mitchell’s visionary approach continues to shape the future of engineering education, inspiring new generations of educators and students alike.
