Why should you choose a UCL security and crime science postgraduate course?

  • University of the Year 2024. Awarded by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, we’re also ranked 9th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings (2024).
  • World-class research facilities. The Jill Dando Institute (JDI) brings together 30 research groups, pioneering crime science approaches and developing new security technologies in custom-built spaces such as the UCL Forensic Interpretation Lab, the Crime Science VR Projects Lab, the IoT Lab (Internet of Things) and the JDI Research Lab (Secure Data Facility).
  • Industry partnerships and connections. The Jill Dando Institute is proud to work in partnership with world leaders across law enforcement and other governmental agencies. We’ve collaborated on many successful initiatives, including a hot spot policing programme that’s reducing robberies and theft across 13 cities in Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico.
  • Real world research impact. Whether we’re setting the world record for the fastest data transmission rate, or helping scale up the manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccine, the impact of our research continues to be felt all over the planet.

Discover new ways to solve crimes at UCL

Here at UCL Security and Crime Science, we do more than study crime.

In contrast to more traditional criminology departments, we apply problem solving frameworks and engineering methodologies to complex crime problems. Our quantitative approaches are then used to underpin leading-edge policing initiatives, implemented by our strategic partners in the Metropolitan Police, the Home Office and beyond.

Training as a crime and security engineer, you’ll learn how to use science to detect, analyse, disrupt and prevent serious crime.

You’ll work in a cross-disciplinary team alongside police and law enforcement professionals as well as a diverse group of leading academics, with significant contributions from the Jill Dando Institute, the UCL Centre for Criminal Law, the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, UCL Computer Science and more.

In a rapidly evolving society where over half of crime is now committed online, you’ll help uncover opportunities to deploy new technologies, protecting people and communities.

The Jill Dando Institute, our research arm, is home to UCL SECReT – the international centre for PhD training in security and crime science. With £20m in research funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), 100% of our research submissions were rated as ‘world-leading’ for societal impact by the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in both 2014 and 2021.

Many of the postgraduate courses offered here at UCL are also open to candidates without a first degree who have five or more years of relevant experience working in a police or crime prevention role.
