Day 1: Understanding Qualitative Research Methods

Lead: Dr Julia Bailey

This session introduces students to key concepts in qualitative research so that students understand what qualitative research is, and what it can bring to the scientific table. Contrasts will be drawn with quantitative approaches, and the place of qualitative research in health and medicine discussed. We will critique a published qualitative study, to consider the methodological approach and choice of methods, and practical aspects such as sampling, what counts as data, the position of the researcher, data analysis, and application of findings.
