Architecture student
Philip Cheshire Read Jayasuriya was born on 9th October 1894 and was from
Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He trained at the Government Training College in Colombo
and then studied at UCL from 1920 to 1922 in the Faculty of Arts, studying
Architecture. Courses he took included building construction, ancient,
classical, medieval and renaissance architecture, design and town planning.
Whilst studying in London he lived at 44 Hilldrop Road, N7. In 1924, now
working as an architect he moved to Bloomsbury, residing at 46 Gower Place.
Returning to Ceylon in 1924 he became the Principal Assistant, Archaeological
Commissioner of Ceylon.
