UCL Scholarships for History MA Students
Jean Orr Scholarship
This scholarship is available each year to one Master's student, who may be studying in one or more of the following departments: History, French, Italian, or Dutch. The award will be given on the basis of academic merit and has a value of £7,000, which is to be redeemed against tuition fees for the year. (If there is any leftover money then this will be given as a maintenance grant.) Candidates wishing to be considered for the Jean Orr scholarship must have submitted their complete application (including references) by 19 May. All eligible candidates whose applications have been received by this date will be considered.
Carol Chattaway Scholarship
One scholarship is awarded each year to a postgraduate student (taught or research) who is working in the field of medieval history. Particular consideration will be given to mature students and female students. The award has a value of £2,500, redeemable against the cost of tuition. Those wishing to be considered for this award must have submitted their complete application to UCL (including references) by 15 May. All eligible candidates whose applications have been received by this date will be considered.
UCL Funding Schemes for All Departments
The UCL student funding office has built a scholarship finder that applicants can use to search for university funding schemes that might apply to them. These may be limited by country of origin, financial need, or other criteria.
UK Government Loans for MA Study
Students who are normally resident in England, as well as some other EU nationals, may be eligible to apply for a postgraduate loan to support their MA study. This is administered much like the undergraduate loans with which most candidates who have already completed undergraduate degrees in the UK will be familiar. The loan amount is added to your student loans total and is paid off along with the loans from undergraduate study. MARS Scholarship Student Experiences

The MARS scholarship was massively helpful to me. It allowed me to devote much more of my time to the MA because the pressure of having to support myself in London was greatly reduced. I felt that I was able to achieve much more than I would have otherwise, especially during the dissertation stage.
For me, the biggest strength of the MARS MA is the focus it places on a historicist approach. There is such close examination of contexts and causes which was different to the analysis of my undergraduate in English Literature. The interdisciplinary nature of the MA exposed me to many different ways of thinking.
I'm currently studying for my PhD in medieval English Literature at Northwestern, exploring similar themes and texts to those of my Master's thesis. I also published my first novel, which has been heavily influenced by this period and the structures of thought contained within it."

My MA dissertation focused on the interaction between landscape and identity in post-Anglo-Norman medieval Irish literature. I chose this MA for the hands-on experience with manuscripts and the chance to learn the original manuscript languages.
One of the MA's greatest strengths is the breadth of opportunity; you can take your studies in any direction, and with such a variety of modules, you will find something that sparks your interest. A discussion in a Power and Identity seminar inspired my MA dissertation, and my DPhil topic developed from an essay I wrote as part of the Magic in the Middle Ages module.
After finishing my MA in 2022, I successfully applied for a DPhil in English at the University of Oxford with the support and advice of my supervisor and lecturers at UCL."
