Kosice Street

Košice is situated in the Southern portion of Eastern Slovakia, 19 kilometres from the Hungarian border. It is the second largest city in Slovakia with a population of 234,871 (Men: 112,090 l Women: 122,781) in 2005. Located on the river Hornád, Košice spans 244 km squared and due to emigration, Košice is sparsely populated for a major city, with a population density of 957.6 inhabitants per km squared in 2007 - 2009.

Similar to other Central European cities, Košice has a low proportion of immigrants at 3.4%. Yet unlike other cities of the region, Košice has a high unemployment rate at 19.1%, the highest of all cities included in the INEQ-CITIES Atlas. The steel industry plays an important economic role in the city and as well in the region, employing 30.3% of the workforce. Nonetheless, the service sector employs 69% of those in active employment, leaving a small agricultural sector employing 0.7% of the city's working population.
