One of Dr Quilter's embryo models

Modelling a one-month human embryo

Some people can understand solid shapes just by looking at pictures, but others need to handle them.

Dr Colin Quilter at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, has developed an illustrated instruction kit for making your own fourth-week embryo from heat-curable modelling material in about 3 hours.

All the information you need, whether to make one model in your own kitchen or to organize model-building for a large class, can be downloaded from his modelling website.

His students say that it’s fun to do and helps them lay down long-lasting memories about embryonic structure. As a spin-off you will get an attractive, permanent, colour-coded model, about 100 mm long, that you can put on show to intrigue your friends. The photo shows a completed model before labelling and mounting.
