Research themes

There are several groups from the Institute represented in the division. Below if a list and brief description of them

The Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy contains the Epilepsy Imaging Group which is based around a 3.0 T MR scanner at the National Society for Epilepsy at Chalfont, Buckinghamshire.

The Department of Neurodegenerative Disease contains the Dementia Research Group.

The Department of Headache, Brain Injury & Rehabilitation has stroke amongst its interests.

The Department of Neuroinflammation contains the NMR Research Unit physics group, which is primarily concerned with research into Multiple Sclerosis, although there are strong collaborative links with groups studying other diseases. A 1.5 T whole-body scanner is in the basement of Queen Square House.

The Welcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging (incorporating the Functional Imaging Laboratory) , pursues brain research by means of functional and structural imaging supported by the physics group. The centre is equipped with a 1.5 T whole body scanner (Siemens Sonata), a 3 T head scanner (Siemens Allegra), a 3 T whole body scanner (Siemens Tim Trio), an MEG system (CTF/VSM), and two EEG systems, one being MR compatible.

The Lysholm Department of Neuroradiology, in the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square has a 1.5 T scanner in the basement of Queen Mary Wing for NHS and research work. This is shortly to be expanded by the addition of a 3.0 T scanner, another 1.5 T system and a replacement for the old machine and an interventional scanner allowing combined surgery and imaging.
