Gauge Theory and Invariants

Abstract:

The uses of "gauge theory", that is — connections on principal/vector bundles — to obtain invariants of smooth manifolds, has been a topic of mathematical research since at least the 80s. This talk will give some overviews and look a bit more in depth at the Casson invariant, a basic type of gauge-invariant for homology 3-spheres. This will (hopefully) be a gentle introduction to the subject.
