Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) p. 185: visited Farm, 'a pen or cattle estate'. 'The hospital is a large well-ventilated building. Every hospital is furnished with that relic of former times, the stocks. The negro village of the Farm, is probably one of the best in the island.' Joseph Gordon was their attorney. Material level of Whitehall Ellis, the head negro, surprised Sturge & Harvey [p 186]. As an enslaved person Ellis could not receive compensation: he lost it to a faithless friend.
