Claim Notes

Parliamentary Papers p. 310. This claim has tentatively been linked to an estate called Gales known to have been owned by the James Willoughby Gordon son of Francis Grant Gordon in 1806.

Mary Grant Gordon, formerly of the Island of Antigua but now residing in the City of Brussels, was the widow of the late Francis Grant Gordon, of England. In 1770, Francis Grant Gordon had granted a bond of £6000 to Sir Willoughby Aston 5th bart. and Thomas Pye, Vice Admiral, to secure an annuity of £200 p.a. to Mary Grant Gordon. On Francis Grant Gordon's death, Sir Willoughby Aston 6th bart.went to court in Antigua to gain a judgement on the bond (to secure it against the plantation?). The enslaved persons went to Mary Grant Gordon in lieu of the annuity.
