Maurice Jones

Slave-owner in Jamaica, moving to Britain after Emancipation.

1. Will of Maurice Jones [formerly of the island of Jamaica but now] of No. 46 Brompton Square [made in 1841] proved 07/09/1844. He left his estate called Boston in Portland Jamaica to his son John Pugh Jones subject to the payment of £50 currency to his [the testator's] daughter-in-law [sic] Elizabeth Hearn wife of Philip Hearn of Jamaica. He left his estate called Hartford in St Thomas-in-the-East to his sons George Beadnell [?] Jones and James Johnson Jones and their lawful heirs begotten 'on the bodies of white women', also subject to £50 currency to Elizabeth Hearn. He left his estate in Montgomeryshire called Cyfnllan [sp?] to his daughters Margaret Maria Jones and Sarah Johnson Jones subject to an annuity of £160 p.a. for the support of the testator's wife Sarah Jones. In a codicil he left his wife an annuity of £200 p.a. secured on Boston and his daughters annuities of £100 each secured on Hartford. In a second codicil he left the leasehold he had purchased of a house at No. 10 Pelham Place to his wife for life and then to his daughters.

2. In the will of Sarah Jones of No. 10 Pelham Place, the widow of Maurice Jones, proved 20/05/1846, she left to her daughters Margaret Maria Jones and Sarah Johnson Kolle 'the bond purchased by me in the George's Creek Coal and Iron mine'; and she left them the arrears on her annuity of £200 p.a. to be paid to them only if her son John Pugh Jones claimed the Exchequer Bills 'left by my late husband and intended' for her two daughters.

3. Margaret Maria Jones married Thomas Atherton timber merchant 26/09/1853 when her father Maurice Jones was described as 'West India merchant'. In 1871 she was living with her sister and brother-in-law Henry Kolle 'retired warehouseman' at Cefnellan [sic] House, Foulden Road Stamford Hill Hackney. Their house presumably took the name of the Montgomeryshire estate that has yet to be identified by LBS but which might have been, or embraced, the Cefn Llan hill fort.
