Biography

Attorney in western Jamaica from at least 1820; owner of a small group of enslaved people based in Westmoreland, who might have been hired out to other estates. He came or returned to England after Emancipation and died near Winchester in 1842.

  1. Will of William Carey, [formerly of Trelawny Jamaica but now residing in the village] of St Cross near Winchester proved December 1842. He left £1000 3 per cent consolidated bank stock to his reputed son also William Carey at 21 with the dividends to him until then, and a further £300 immediately in the event of his [the testator's] death while his son was under 21; he left £1500 3% consolidated bank stock to his reputed daughter Martha Carey, together with property known as the Water Wheel in Westmoreland subject to the life-interest of her mother Eleanor Graves; he left £1500 3% consolidated bank stock each to further natural sons Thomas and Edward (in these three cases they were each to have the interest on £2000 to support them if he died before they reached majority); and the interest on £1000 for life to the children's mother Eleanor Graves his housekeeper residing at Bluefields in Westmoreland. He left the interest on £400 3% consolidated bank stock each to his widowed sister Martha Hartley of 31 Palace Row Lambeth and his sister Elizabeth Easther [?] of Saint Cross near Winchester and £300 3% consolidated bank annuities to his nephew Edward Easther, to whom he also left his share in the Grand Junction Canal 'now in the hands of Earl St Vincent'. His residuary heir was his natural son William Carey.
