Edmund Gardiner

Awarded the compensation for Flint River estate in Hanover, having claimed as owner-in-fee, although correspondence from a potentially competing claimant asserted that he was executor of John Hill, who is shown as Edmund Gardiner's attorney on Flint River.

1. 'At Hurley, Berks., [marriage of] Edmund Gardiner Esq., of Remenham Lodge to Ann, third daughter of John Mangles Esq.' (10/08/1820). 'Lately, at Remenham Lodge, near Henley-upon-Thames, the wife of Edward [sic] Gardiner esq., a daughter' (1821). Remenham Lodge was sold at auction by executors of Edmund Gardiner in 1845. It is extant as Grade II listed Remenham Court, said to have been built 1830-1840.

2. Harriet Jane eldest daughter of Captain Edmund Gardiner Lodge co. Essex [sic] late 16th Light Dragoons JP was married at Remenham Co. Berks 16/12/1841 to Francis Smythies, 3 times Mayor of Colchester.

T71/915 Hanover claim no. 53. Letter T71/1608 from James Bedlow of Carlow in Ireland 30/10/1835: estate was John Hill's [d. 1828], who left it to his 4 sisters, then residing in Europe [Bedlow married to one]. Edmund Gardiner of Remmanham Lodge, Henley on Thames [Oxfordshire] was an Executor, 'circumstances having rendered it expedient to file a Bill in Equity against that Gentleman to render an account of his Trust', seeks info on claims, ccs and slaves etc. [also No. 78 and No. 79]. NB letter from Edward Gardiner of Remenham Lodge 16/03/1835: as proprietor-in-fee of Flint River [filed under No. 184]: Attorney was Isaac Jackson. Edmund Gardiner had been told that valuations were not made known to the Parties concerned: 'Thus I am left completely in the dark, wholly ignorant of what has been transacting in this matter and I can not but think that I, as a Person having so large an Interest therein, ought not to be kept any longer wholly uninformed upon the subject.'
