Samuel Baker

1. Witness at the 1832 Select Committee on the Extinction of Slavery where he describes himself as a merchant in London and whose interest in 'West Indian property' is in receiving consignments from Jamaica.

2. Significant actor in the development of Gloucester, notably the Gloucester Docks (where Baker's Quay remains)

3. Father of Sir Samuel White Baker (1821–1893), traveller and explorer in Africa; committee member of the Eyre Defence Fund 1866

4. Samuel Baker is shown in the 1861 census living at Thorngrove House, Grimley (Worcs.) aged 67 born Bristol 'Esq., Magistrate of counties of Gloucester and Worcester', with his wife Eliza M. [?] aged 45 born Gloucester. Thorngrove is a Grade II* listed late 18C country house.

5. Samuel Baker died 10/05/1862 late of Thornygrove [sic] in the county of Worcester and of the City of Gloucester, will proven 28/06/1862 by John Garland Baker.
