Francis Workman of Barbados

Of Barbados, mortgagee of enslaved people in Jamaica. He died between 1817 and 1821, and was probably the Francis Workman buried at St Mary Swansea 22/06/1821 aged 67.

1. Will of Francis Workman of [No. 2] Montpellier Parade Cheltenham [made in 1814] proved 19/09/1821. He left legacies totalling £1000 to six of his children, with the comment - difficult to unpick - that it equated to the sums that had been owed to him by various people in Barbados that had been paid, and which he had then spent in improvements to his English estate called Mainstone Court, which he had since sold to John Wood. A codicil of 1817 showed him as of Swansea, and mentioned the death of his son James, with his wife Jane and four daughters (Katherine, Jane, Mary and Barbara) surviving him. Administration was granted to his daughter Katherine in 1825 and to Edward Cooke and Matthew Parker [who were the executors of his daughter Barbara] in 1878.

2. Francis Workman's daughter Barbara (who had married Thomas Workman, presumably her cousin) died of 2 The Cloisters Gordon Square 09/08/1877 leaving £3000 (resworn from £800).
