Biography

Annuitant of 'slave-property' in Jamaica, his annuities detailed in his will made in 1776.

  1. Will of Thomas Cox of [Charles Street] St James Westminster [made in 1776] proved 16/01/1789. He left: his real estate in the Vale of White Horse Berkshire to his eldest son William; his personalty to his wife Anna Diana on trust to fund the education of his three sons with the principal shared between them at 21; and the £900 he had invested in the Irish Tontine on the lives of their daughters in trust to his wife for the support of the daughters. He had two several annuities of £75 p.a. each from Montague James (q.v.) and Samuel Torrent James both of Soho Square secured on the Spring plantation in Hanover Jamaica, one on the lives of his son William and daughter Margaretta Diana, the other on the lives of his daughters Caroline Henrietta and Sophia Maria, secured by a deed of 1775 (to which he summarised the parties, including Thomas Brograve q.v.) and by a bond of Montague James, John Serocold and John Jackson; he also had two annuities again of £75 p.a each secured on the Richmond estate in St Ann Jamaica of William Gray 'late Provost Marshal', one payable on the lives of William Cox and Caroline Henrietta Cox and the other on the lives of Margaretta Diana and Sophia Maria Cox under deeds of 1776 with a bond from William Gray and Thomas Case of Liverpool. He left all four annuities in trust with his wife for the benefit of his three daughters equally.

Cox now or late of of Charles Street) who had originally contracted with William Gray were listed in a new agreement with Emanuel Baruch Lousada and Jacob Israel Bernal 13/10/1784 for the payment of their annuities to which the two estates [Old and New Works] were subject on their purchase by Lousada and Bernal [Caribbeana Vol. III pp. 156-7]. Thomas Cox detailed the annuity in his will made in 1776 and proved in 1789.
