Biography

  1. Of 19 South Street, Thurlow Square, Brompton, Middlesex, when he died there 10/03/1861 (formerly of Kennington, Surrey); probate to James Kent of Mile End Road and testator’s niece Maria Jane Fletcher Kent, spinster, of same address; value of effects under £450. Buried at Brompton Cemetery, 15/03/1861 aged 68 years.

  2. He was Collector of Transient Tax and Harbour Master at Black River, 1824. Presumably the same as “Charles William Seacole” who had a grant of 300 acres in St Elizabeth, 08/04/1824.

  3. Presumably also the sale as “Charles Westcote Seacole” appointed Lieutenant, St Elizabeth Regiment, 16/11/1827. C. W. Seacole was a Captain in 1839.

  4. The firm of Miller and Seacole had 10 enslaved, 16 stock, in St Elizabeth, 1832.

  5. John Garden Seacole, a "free mustee" child, born 14/07/1823, was baptised in St Elizabeth, 24/03/1824 (parentage not recorded in the baptismal record).

  6. Charles Witton Seacole was a brother of Edwin Horatio Seacole (1803-44) who married Mary Grant - i.e. Mary Seacole, an important figure in the history of nursing, who had links to Black River in the 1820s.

  6. They were both sons of Thomas Seacole, surgeon, of Southend, Essex, whose daughter Maria married James Kent of Mile End (see 1 above): Essex Standard 15/05/1835.
