William Henery

???? - 1836

Biography

  1. Planter in Demerara who by 1832 had moved to Britain and settled in the neighbourhood of Liverpool. Henery told the 1832 Select committee on the Commercial State of the West India Colonies that he had first arrived in Demerara the year after abolition of the slave trade; he immediately afterwards gives his arrival as 1806 but later gives 1808, presumably correctly. He remained in Demerara upwards of 20 years but had most recently been there only for a few months some two years previously, returning in May 1830.   He alludes to first purchasing an estate around 1818, but also refers to [Lambert?] Blair as his guardian managing the demographics of the enslaved workforce, presumably around the time of his arrival.  Henery also characterised his estates as unencumbered and himself as an independent planter, with no consignee ties.

  2. Baptism 20/10/1827 at St George, Everton Lancashire of Francis Campbell Henery child of William and Sarah Henery born 01/09/1827, abode Everton; merchant. The burial of a 'William Henry' of Everton aged 49 was recorded at St George Everton 11/08/1836, while the death of a William Henery was registered at Liverpool Q1 1861, but no will or probate details have yet been found in either case.

  3. Almost certainly the same man as the William Henery merchant of Doe Park Liverpool who appears as the father of Edmund Thornton Henery (1819-1902), who matriculated Caius Cambridge 1840, 'a merchant in British Guiana for many years.'
