Scope and content
This collection is the personal library of Louis Arnaud Reid (1895-1986). It consists mainly of books, but there are substantial runs of unbound periodicals.
History
Louis Arnaud Reid (1895-1986) came to the IOE in 1947 as Britain's first Professor of the Philosophy of Education, a position he held until his retirement in 1962. After this date, he continued to teach students in the Institute's Art and Design Department. He wrote and lectured widely on aesthetics and the arts. Reid was a a founding member of both the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain and the British Society of Aesthetics. Reid was a prolific author. His A Study of Aesthtics published in 1931 was highly praised by well-known French-American historian Jacques Barzun.
