Opening hours
Joining the library
If you are eligible and wish to join the Joint Library of Ophthalmology, please submit an online library membership application. Once we process your application, we will contact you by email for induction and collection of your library card.

Location
The Library is situated on the lower ground floor.
Visitors
All visitors to the library, including UCL staff and students from other campuses, who are not members of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, should register with the reception desk at the entrance of the Institute.
Accessibility
Disabled visitors to the Joint Library of Ophthalmology are advised to contact the Library prior to their visit. UCL Library Services offers a range of other accessibility facilities which are listed separately.
The Joint Library of Ophthalmology is situated on the Lower Ground Floor of the Institute of Ophthalmology. There is a ramp entrance to the building. A lift is available to the Lower Ground Floor. There are small steps between the street and the Library.
Two height adjustable desks are located in the Library. Please ask staff who will be happy to direct you to them. Please note that the seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can`t be reserved in advance.
There are no step free evacuation routes for those that are not able to use the stairs. If you are unable to use the stairs in an emergency please place a fetching request for required material by emailing the Library Accessibility Team.

Subject coverage and guides
The Joint Library of Ophthalmology is the leading ophthalmic library in Europe and supports the research, teaching and clinical work of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Library collection contains books, journals and audio-visual items on the subject areas of:
- ophthalmology
- visual science
- biomedicine, medicine and nursing
Library members can also access UCL electronic journals and books.
Resources and Services
- Who can use the Library
Full membership is available to
- UCL staff;
- UCL students;
- NHS staff employed by Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
NHS staff from other trusts may be eligible to use the Library. Further information on Library support and resources for our NHS members is available on our Library Services for NHS webpage.
Admission at the discretion of the Librarian is given to:
- Visiting academic staff and students;
- Short-term Moorfields workers;
- Collaborative researchers at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields.
External visitors wishing to visit the Library to access the Explore Access Points service for e-resources must pay a fee. See our webpage on information for external visitors for further details and our Library Membership pages on how to gain access, or please contact us for information.
Members are entitled to use all UCL Libraries on production of a valid UCL Library ID card.
All users of the Library must abide by the Library Regulations.
Safety and security
The Library is protected by a security system and is covered by CCTV. If an alarm sounds as you are leaving it may be necessary to examine any library materials in your possession.
If the fire alarm sounds please leave the Library immediately by the nearest exit as directed, and assemble outside the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology building, on the other side of Bath Street.
Please do not leave valuables unattended. Any lost property handed in will be held initially at the Issue Desk, and may then be handed in to the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology reception.
- Borrowing, renewing, reserving and returning items
Books are located on the open shelves. DVDs and CD ROMs are held at the Issue Desk, so please speak to a member of staff if you wish to consult them. Specific item locations may be checked using the Library catalogue Explore.
The Library holds back-files of over 250 ophthalmic journal titles. Journals are to be consulted within the Library as reference only.

Items may be borrowed from and returned to the Issue Desk on production of a valid UCL ID card / UCL Library card, or by using the self-service machine (you must have your library card with you and know your PIN).
Reserving items
To reserve an item currently on loan, locate it on Explore, click in the 'Locations' tab and sign in with your library barcode number and PIN. An email will be sent to you as soon as the item is ready for collection from the Issue Desk and must be collected within 7 days.
Interlibrary Loans
Books and journal articles held at other UCL Library sites or not in stock at UCL may be requested using our Interlending and Document Supply Service. Please note, a charge may apply.
- Theses
UCL Institute of Ophthalmology theses are available for reference only from the UCL Library Stores. Please see information on Theses for more details. Examples of PhD and MD theses and MSc dissertations are held in the Library. Visit UCL Discovery Plus to view a number of free online theses.
- Historical Collection and Reprints
The Library holds a collection of historical materials dating back to 1585, including books, journals, paintings and ophthalmic instruments. Items held in the Historical Collection are available for reference only by appointment. Please contact us in advance of your visit.
Reprints dating from the 16th century are available for reference by appointment.
- Electronic Resources
UCL electronic resources
UCL Library Services provides access to a huge range of electronic resources (e-resources) to support you in your studies, research and teaching. Please see the E-resources@UCL webpage for details on how to search for and access e-resources.
NHS electronic resources
With an NHS OpenAthens account, NHS staff can access a number of electronic resources including healthcare databases, electronic journals and electronic books. You can self register for NHS OpenAthens; please make sure use your Moorfields email address when you apply for an account. Once you have obtained your account you can access a range of ophthalmic journals, ophthalmic books, databases and other electronic resources from NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. Access core ophthalmic books from the ClinicalKey. Ensure that you click on OpenAthens login option.
Moorfields staff based at the satellite sites can request an electronic copy of journal articles and book chapters, normally available via the UCL Library Explore Access Points. Please see our Additional NHS Support webpage for further details.

IT resources for UCL staff and students
- Desktop@UCL computers for UCL staff and students;
- UCL Wi-Fi (eduroam);
- Printing, photocopying and scanning using the UCL multi-functional device on the Print@UCL service (UCL ID card required).
IT resources for Moorfields NHS staff
- Explore Access Points allow NHS staff and library visitors to access UCL electronic journals and databases;
- NHS networked computers for Moorfields Eye Hospital staff;
- Moorfields NHS Wi-Fi;
- Free printing, photocopying and scanning using the Moorfields networked multi-functional device (FollowMe).
- Training
LibrarySkills@UCL is now running a wide range of live online training open to all UCL staff and students and NHS members of UCL Libraries. Visit the LibrarySkills@UCL full training calendar to see upcoming training and make a booking.
Specific training sessions can also be arranged on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. The Library provides training sessions include introductions to searching PubMed, Ovid Medline, CINAHL, NHS Library and Knowledge Hub Search & TRIP, using reference management software such as EndNote and Training on Critical Appraisal of journal articles. Contact the Library to arrange a training session.
- Pod Rooms for virtual meetings
Library members can use a Pod Room for virtual meetings.
- You can make a booking online.
- Check-in from the booking confirmation email within 30 minutes of the start your slot to avoid cancellation of your booking.
Enquiries
We are happy to help with enquiries, in person, over phone, by e-mail and on Teams. Unfortunately, we are unable to deal with specific medical queries from members of the public. However, patient information on eye conditions is available on the Moorfields Eye Hospital website.
Moorfields Direct, a nurse-led telephone helpline is available between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to assist you with queries about your eyes. Telephone: 020 7566 2345 (this is a London number and will incur normal charges).
Moorfields Eye Hospital Museum
The Moorfields Eye Hospital Museum is housed in the Joint Library of Ophthalmology. Early ophthalmoscopes, an artificial leech, a Pfister and Streit ophthalmometer and a Hardy Keratometer are just some of the ophthalmic exhibits on display.
