LMCB at the Science Museum Lates

The LMCB had a fantastic evening at the Science Museum Lates, part of an ongoing collaboration between Datascape Realities and scientists from LMCB, King’s College London, and Institute of Zoology ZSL. The theme was Damage and Repair.

Understanding the complexities of damage in living systems is paramount for uncovering pathways to restoration. Whether the aim is restoring cellular processes and organ functions or re-establishing ecological balance, the study of damage and repair is enabled through cutting-edge imaging techniques. Research data was displayed ranging from microscopy of three-dimensional cells, photogrammetry of coral reefs, MRI scans of brains to mathematical models developed to simulate real-world behaviours. These data were transformed into beautiful bespoke projections and translated into 3D virtual reality models using Computer Aided Design (CAD) platforms and game design engines - techniques typically utilised in the design profession.

Visitors to the Museum embarked on a visual, virtual journey. They were invited to view a beautiful film of real microscopy images, and to try on VR headsets and explore four scenarios of damage and repair: a cluster of HIV virus within a single cell; a group of contorted tissue cells after a physical wound has been inflicted; a healthy human brain compared to an underdeveloped one; a devastated coral reef versus a thriving restored one.

Researchers were on hand to address any queries, discussing careers as a scientist, their research areas, and many other topics, bringing to life science normally hidden behind complex scientific journals.

It was a brilliant evening enjoyed by all!
