Burial customs in Early Dynastic Egypt
(Naqada III- Second Dynasty, about 3100-2700 BC)
elite burials are in huge mud brick mastabas; poorer
people are often simply buried in shallow holes in the ground
a wooden coffin is common for elite burials
the dead are placed in a contracted position in the
coffin; in the Second Dynasty the body is sometimes laid out full length
in front of the dead is placed a funerary meal
in the burial chamber are placed many objects of daily
use (furniture, games, weapons, tools)
(note: these tombs had been extensively plundered
in ancient and/or medieval times)
