Roman houses in Egypt: Karanis (Kom Aushim)

Karanis is a well preserved and well excavated settlement in the Fayum. Houses and finds date mostly to the late Roman Period. In the Roman Period there is good evidence for a new house type introduced in Egypt. The type is often called 'tower house'. The house is built on a small area, but is very high. The example shown here, excavated at Karanis shows the staircase going up to the upper floors.
