Oxyrhynchus: papyri in the Petrie Museum
Oxyrhynchus is best known for its extraordinary number of Greek papyri, dating mainly to the Roman period. The papyri come from the rubbish dumps of the city, and provide a detailed view on life in Roman Egypt and, to an exten, across the Roman Empire in general.
