Science found an unusual setting this year at Sci-Fi London, an annual event of fantasy films and literature, with astronomers and physicists taking part in panels on aliens and space colonisation. Dr Rachel Armstrong, Teaching Fellow at the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture, discusses how such public outreach - which she terms practical science fiction - is important in foregrounding the inherent creativity of scientific methods that inspire the public imagination.
