Course Overview

This course will provide an introduction to the interpretation of videofluoroscopic images in the diagnosis and treatment of adults with acquired dysphagia. Participants will view videofluoroscopic studies of adults. Normal adult swallowing and swallowing changes with ageing will be reviewed. Disordered swallowing from patients with a variety of neurological and head and neck diagnoses will be reviewed. From the swallowing disorders identified radiographically, therapy will be outlined based on therapeutic techniques detailed in current literature.

Aims

  1. To present the physiology of normal adult swallowing based on current research data
  2. To develop understanding of the therapeutic principles of dysphagia management
  3. To demonstrate how identification of the physiologic impairment informs and directs therapeutic intervention

Objectives

By the end of this course participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the current theory on adult swallow physiology
  2. Identify swallowing symptoms and disorders from videofluorographic studies
  3. Select and devise therapeutic programmes for patients with dysphagia based on the physiology of the swallowing disorder

Target Audience

This course is for participants who have no, or very limited experience reviewing video swallow studies. Participants should have an interest in the use of videofluoroscopy as an effective medium for assessing swallowing and planning intervention. Current knowledge of the physiology of normal swallowing will be reviewed utilising the medium of videofluorographic studies. This course is NOT designed to address clinical ‘bedside’ assessment or management of dysphagia.

If participants have videotapes of their own videofluorographic studies, they are welcome to bring these for the group to review, time permitting.
