Number Processing in Children born Preterm

We are seeking help with a research study into the development of maths skills in school children.

Why are we interested in studying math skills in preterm children?

Being born very premature can have long lasting effects on a child’s development, particularly with regard to their learning and their achievement in school. One area of schooling that many premature children find especially difficult is maths. To help us find new ways to help provide appropriate support for premature children in this area we need to understand the kinds of difficulties they may have in more detail.

In our research we aim to:

  1. Assess academic skills (math and literacy skills), attention, inhibition, working memory and flexibility (also known as executive function) using behavioural tests.
  2. Explore brain activity during tasks involving basic math skills.

We are focusing on children aged 8, 9 and 10 years old who were:

Born at full term (after 36 weeks of gestational age)

Born very preterm (before 32 weeks of gestation or more than 8 weeks early)
