We provide a range of advice, information and guidance for UCL research staff wishing to progress their research careers within academia, whether that means finding another postdoctoral research post or applying for your first lectureship position. Vitae: Developing your Academic Career. Describes opportunities that you might have to develop skills for an academic career, by participating in: Teaching, Administration, Entrepreneurship, Supervision and also outlines some of the mechanisms in place to help you reflect on and plan your development, such as: Probation, Professional Development Review and Mentoring.

 

 

 

 

Science Magazine. Tools & Tips Booklets:

  • Career Basics - Useful sections include: Ch 2 Marketing Yourself, Ch3 Skills for the Academic Scientist, Ch 4 Diversity Issues in Science, Ch 7 Leadership & Lab management.

Research Career Builder - This is an online tool designed to help you to develop a research career plan. The RCB is used in the series of workshops ‘Develop Your Research Career – as an Academic’, see SDTU section above.

 

 

 

Research Councils UK. The umbrella organisation for all eight UK research councils. Good starting point for information on types of funding, deadlines, success rates etc.

 

 

 

 

European Commission: Research. Portal with information on finding funding, research policy, information and areas of research.

JISC Mail - The National Academic Mailing List Service, known as 'JISCmail', is one of a number of JANET services provided by JANET(UK) and funded by the JISC to benefit learning, teaching and research communities.

 

 

 

Intute - A free online database of hand selected Web resources for education and research. The research areas covered are Science & Technology, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Health and Life Sciences. Includes Blogs, news and events listings.

 

 

 

 

London Biotechnology Network

A business network of over 800 organisations and 2000 individuals from all facets of the industry: academic, biopharma, professional services, finance, law and facilities. The LBN strives to provide members with relevant information and networking opportunities to foster industry interactions and innovation.

 

 

 

Nature Network

A site with Blogs, Forums and events with the aim of facilitating contact between scientists.

 

 

 

The Source Event from Nature. A dedicated science career fair that combines a dynamic exhibition with conference and workshop sessions. The event will promote the UK and Europe as a great place to pursue a career in science, be it in industrial research, research organisations or academia.
