A. Howard – MA/MFA

My artistic practice intertwines personal narratives with broader cultural observations, delving into themes of class, taste, and labour.

Before my time at Slade, I engaged in various roles within industry, where the cultivation of taste was central. This experience led me to reflect on the origins of aesthetic norms and their implications for social mobility. I employ presentation techniques to explore the transient nature of aesthetic preferences. Rather than dismissing surface appearances as superficial, I perceive them as sites for constructing meaning.

As I delve into my personal history and the significance of domestic spaces, I question ingrained habits and the societal value placed on work ethic. Through my practice, I use everyday objects to evoke collective experiences. Using personification or subversion; I infuse humour into my artwork through images, sculptures, and installations. These pieces capture contradictions and explore the facades of culture.
