Ross Head – MA/MFA

The performance and expression of desire is central to my artistic practice. My compositions are worlds for intimate moments to take place, offering spaces to explore queerness, masculinity and body image. Paint itself helps shape these potential narratives – colour-filled space, delicate marks and thick textures – are all active participants in the stories being created. I avidly collect images and draw upon archival imagery, film stills and sports photography. The archive becomes a site for imagination and in the process of painting, scenes become less specific to time and place and allude more toward alternative realities. Drawing on the relationship that queerness and other non-normative gender identities have with modern and contemporary architecture, my paintings contain fantastical elements that celebrate theatricality.
