Wanci Xie

This collection explores the relationship between rain, land and individual identity. The fluidity of identity brought about by constantly moving to different cities keeps me always separated. Memories, people and things that cannot be taken with me are left in the past. But fortunately, it rains in every city I have lived in, and "rain" has become the only thing I can "take with me". Bathing in the rain of my hometown not only washes away the pain of nostalgia but also reawakens the memories I have associated with it.

The bright yellow PH paper stripes are carefully sewn onto the canvas using deep-red strings, simulating the rainfall scene. After sprinkling the collected rainwater in Chengdu (where the artist grew up), the PH paper turned into a vivid green colour. When the rainwater evaporates, there are still greenish water marks left on the PH paper, the “form” of the homeland rain is retained.
