, 2013, water-colored collage, liquid type of 5 smells and 6 scents, 80 ml.My work includes the study of smellscapes ; creating place related smells and scents to explore mindscape in a specific place. In my current work, I utilize smell as a medium to encode the elusive moment and immediate feelings of a fictional painter, Jong Il Kim, a creation of my mind. I have never met Jong Il Kim in person but have kept his original portrait from childhood till now. Based on the date (Jun 1986) and the color of the painting, I selected possible spots in the city where the painter would be emotionally inspired when he makes the portrait, 'girl with a blue rose' in 1986. Through extracting and reproducing scents from the spots, I made the painter's mindscape of Olafsfjorour, during my artist residency at Lithus Gallery in Iceland. My focus within this study is to explore how place-specific smells can reconstruct the atmosphere of an intimate space, specifically for other painters within my painting practice. The approach I took was to analyze the scents of the personal belonging of other artists & residents, to focus on their autobiographical objects and reconstruct an image of their private sphere. I intend to represent an immersive feeling through olfactory experience breathing the provocative smells lingering in a selected city.
