Moving forward: how to overcome research career setbacks
Course Description:

Have you ever failed an exam, had a paper rejected, or not been short-listed for a job?

Higher education institutions excel when it comes to preparing staff and students for success in their academic endeavours. There is no shortage of advice on how to prepare students for the job market; guidance for writing research funding applications; or workshops on putting together a manuscript proposal. Yet, success in all of these arenas is by no means guaranteed and there is considerably less advice available for dealing with disappointments. This interactive workshop will consider how to navigate through professional setbacks more quickly and easily.

Objectives:

This session will cover:

  • How we define a professional setback
  • External and internal influences that inform perceived setbacks
  • The role of the inner critic
  • Tips for navigating through professional setbacks

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Turn down the volume of your inner critic
  • Reframe the story surrounding past setbacks
  • Put your disappointments in context
  • Bounce back from a perceived setback with greater ease
